Holofcener mines laughter and cringe-inducing drama from every step of Eva’s attempt to build a new connection amid the wreckage of an old one, as she embarks on a halting, sweet, and sometimes fraught relationship with a divorcee, Albert.
Force Majeure. (2014). The superb Swedish comedy opens with a fatherly failing. When an avalanche looks to be barreling toward a family vacationing in the Alps, Tomas naturally panics and flees rather than attempting to safeguard his wife and children. Nobody is wounded, but Tomas’s act of bravery haunts his wife, Ebba , and Stlund builds the humorous tension as their holiday progresses, night after night. “Force Majeure” is a provocative look at the modern family and the frail nature of masculinity. However, the picture is both acidly humorous and gripping, like an emotional Jenga tower that rises and rises until collapsing.
