Enough Said (2013). A list of family films would be incomplete without at least one film about divorce, and Holofcener’s stinging comedy is one of my personal favorites in that category. “Enough Said” delves into the perplexing complexities of post-divorce dating. The main character — Eva is attempting to get back into the game following her divorce from her husband, but she has to deal with both her ex’s sentiments and her daughter’s ideas about her new relationships. Holofcener mines laughter and cringe-inducing drama from every step of Eva’s attempt to build a new connection amid the wreckage of an old one, as she embarks on a halting, sweet, and sometimes fraught relationship with a divorcee, Albert.
Force Majeure. (2014). The superb Swedish comedy opens with a fatherly failing. When an avalanche looks to be barreling toward a family vacationing in the Alps, Tomas naturally panics and flees rather than attempting to safeguard his wife and children. Nobody is wounded, but Tomas’s act of bravery haunts his wife, Ebba , and Stlund builds the humorous tension as their holiday progresses, night after night. “Force Majeure” is a provocative look at the modern family and the frail nature of masculinity. However, the picture is both acidly humorous and gripping, like an emotional Jenga tower that rises and rises until collapsing.
Home for the holidays.(1995) Films featuring family reuniting for Thanksgiving are frequently used to produce raunchy humor or serious drama. Home for the Holidays, an underappreciated ’90s charmer about a routine visit home that turns tragicomic farce, has a good balance of both. Holly Hunter and Robert Downey Jr. star as siblings Claudia and Tommy, a single mother who has recently lost her job. Foster utilized her industry influence to film a family narrative that was unique for Hollywood in 1995, about two grown-ups still learning to keep their heads above water in a sometimes unfriendly environment, while she was at the height of her own star power as an actor.
Have you ever watched these films? Never! Rush, they won’t leave you cold.
